Lucio first woman in Cameron County history sentenced to death
BROWNSVILLE – For the first time ever, a Cameron County jury has come back with a death sentence for a woman.
Thirty-nine-year-old Melissa Lucio was sentenced to death for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter.
The toddler was killed in the woman’s home last year. An autopsy showed 2-year-old Mariah died from a blow to the head and had cocaine in her system at the time of her death.
Lucio’s husband, Robert Alvarez, is already in jail for baby Mariah’s death, but he’s only been charged with injury to a child. He could face up to life in prison when his trial starts in August.
The last time the Cameron County District Attorney’s office asked for the death penalty was during the John Allen Rubio and Angela Camacho murder trials. Rubio was sentenced to death, but it was later overturned. Camacho was sentenced to life in prison.
